Mini Polaroid Magnets

So originally I saw this blog on Pinterest (http://www.ambrosiagirl.com/blog/tiny-polaroid-magnets/) and suddenly I wanted tiny Polaroid Magnets all over my fridge too! After reading the blog, I attempted my own set with some of the same materials and some different materials. A bit of experimenting led me to my favorite set...I tried several different approaches and decided to blog about the best set of mini Polaroid magnets that I made since they were different that what you might find out there on the web.

So here is how I made them! 

Supplies you will need:

• Backing  (You can use art board, chip board, cork, wood, card board....My favorite was the art presentation board I picked up at Micheal's for $3.99 in the painting section)
• Adobe Photoshop 
• Photos (You can print these on your own photo printer after you drop your images on the templates in Photoshop or I sent the 4X6 template with all of my pictures to Walgreen's to print for 19 cents each)
• Craft knife
• Sponge paint applicator
• Scissors
• Foil
• Small Bowl
• Metal straight edge/ruler
• Magnetic tape or small magnets
• Hot glue gun/glue
• Mod Podge (Hard Coat see the image below)

STEP 1:

In Photoshop open your Polaroid template and all of the photos you would like to re-size for the project. You will need to crop each picture to a smaller size with the correct resolution.You can find tutorials about how to do this on YouTube. I liked this one by Jenny the best:

Step 2:

Size/Format, then print your Polaroid templates on Photo-paper. (I did the 4x6 template and just sent them to Walgreen's One Hour Photo)

Here is one of my finished template. I added text to each mini Polaroid because I was doing a Christmas Themed Pictures. Text is optional.

  
Step 3:

Cut out the mini Polaroids leaving lots of room around the edge to be trimmed at the end. Then glue them to your backing using the sponge to spread the Mod Podge over the back of the little Polaroids and then stick them to the board.

In this photo I glued them all at once to my art board.

Once you have them sealed down spread your first coat of Mod Podge over then entire board. The Mod Podge will be cloudy, but should dry clear if you coat it correctly. Here is a picture of the board before it was completely dry.

Step 4:

Cut out the mini Polaroids with your scissors. The first time I cut each one apart loosely again leaving extra room for "Trimming to perfection" . Here is my pile...

Now you can take your craft knife and metal ruler and trim up your edges like so!

Step 5:

Coat #2-I then hand painted a coat on each magnet and set them on foil. Let dry completely. Then repeat for 2 more coats.

Now your on coat #5. Pour a small amount of the Mod Podge in a bowl. (Found that this was the easiest way to dip each magnet) Dip each side of the magnet in the Mod Podge, then lay them out on foil. This is to seal off the sides of the magnet. (If you dip a little to much, when they are dry add another coat or two to the top of the magnet to even the build up and let dry.)

*You can use a hair dryer to reduce drying time.

Once they are dry when you pull them off the foil you will notice that some have some excess Mod Podge. I simply trimmed this with my scissors. (You can sand and polish the build up down like the directions say, but I trimmed it up and it was pretty perfect. I didn't even sand/polish the tops)

Step 6: 

Hot glue a magnet to the back and enjoy!
